EU Deploys Emergency Aircraft as Wildfires Rage in Spain and France
In the middle of the extreme heat waves in Europe, the President of the European Union Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that there are four emergency aircraft flying in from Cyprus and Sweden to aid with the wildfire containment operations. The wildfires have now crossed into the neighboring country of Spain where they have burned more than 2,200 hectares in the Les Gavarres natural reserve and evacuated 500 people in the Castellon province when a wildfire broke through the Sierra de Espadan national park. Despite the fact that the Catalan government officials claim that the wildfire in their region is under control, meteorologists say that the risk remains high due to temperatures that are expected to rise above 40 degrees Celsius in parts of France, Spain, and Portugal since there is no rain. These events come after the record-breaking heat wave in June that led to an increase in the number of deaths in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
